The Department of Justice issued standards for the detection, prevention, and response to sexual abuse in prisons, jails, juvenile facilities, community confinement facilities, and lockups in 2012 as a federal regulation pursuant to the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). These standards form the foundation for efforts around the country to keep people safe from sexual abuse in confinement. You can find the Prisons and Jail Standards on the PREA Resource Center website, along with extensive resources aimed at guiding agencies to full compliance.
