Ashaki Scott joins Impact Justice for a second time — now, as a Community Navigator with the Homecoming Project. She began her reentry career as a California Justice Leader AmeriCorps member, serving as a reentry navigator intern for two service years. She grew tremendously while in this role, completing her psychology degree at CSUEB, and also working for a few months as an accounts payable clerk for Impact Justice.
Her background, of having formerly incarcerated family members and her own past experiences with the law, guides her towards re-entry work, as she feels as though it is in her mission to carry out her grandfather’s legacy. Her grandfather was a political prisoner, and upon gaining his freedom when she was just 6 months old, made it a point to advocate and fight for current and formerly incarcerated people. Growing up, her grandparents told her to fight against injustice wherever she saw it. So, in honor of them, she is truly devoted to this work and tries to help others as much as she can, lead by example, and be the best person she can be.
Fun Facts: Ashaki loves to write poetry and travel. She self-published her own book and also spent 4 months this year studying abroad in Ghana.
