Earlier this month, my team had the honor of supporting something truly extraordinary: welcoming the largest cohort in California Justice Leaders history at our annual AmeriCorps Pledge Day celebration.

Nearly 100 justice-impacted young people gathered in Los Angeles to commit to a year of service — stepping into vital roles where they’ll mentor justice-involved youth, support community violence intervention efforts, expand access to reentry resources, and strengthen organizations across California.

That commitment feels especially meaningful this year.

Just one year ago, this program faced real uncertainty. Today, it’s growing faster than ever — and so is the recognition that people with lived experience are essential leaders in the work to build safer, healthier communities.

Looking at you all today, I see a different kind of service. I see the sacrifice of people who have fought through a system designed to keep us small.

One year of service, infinite impact.

Our members don’t take this commitment lightly. They understand the responsibility that comes with stepping into service — and the ripple effects it creates for the young people they will support as they navigate their own reentry journeys.

California Justice Leaders isn’t just a service year — it’s a fundamental redefinition of leadership. And our alumni — many of whom joined us last week to share what’s possible on the other side of this experience — are living proof of the growth, transformation, and long-term impact of this groundbreaking program.

As our newest cohort begins their service year, I hope you’ll follow along. We’re all rooting for them, and they’re just getting started.
