The Sacramento Bee published an op-ed penned by CYRR Director, Nicole Pittman, called Why Kids Don’t Belong on Sex Offender Registries, following the signing of Senate Bill 384 into law by California Governor Jerry Brown.
With the implementation of SB 384, California juveniles are now able to petition for removal from the registry after five or 10 years. Notably, California was the first state to register children as sex offenders, beginning in 1986. Today, faced with the harms, costs, and ineffectiveness of youth registration, California has taken an important first step towards eliminating this policy.
