Impact Justice dares to dream of humane and restorative systems of justice in the United States. Through innovation, research, policy, and advocacy, we are forging new pathways to justice that are fair to all of us. Specifically, we work to reduce the number of people entangled in harmful legal systems, improve living conditions and life outcomes for people who are currently incarcerated, and create opportunities for formerly incarcerated people to fully rejoin communities and reach their potential. Established in 2015, IJ currently has a staff of 85 and an $18M budget.

This is anchor position in an organization expanding its communications capacity and impact. The Senior Communications Manager will play a pivotal role in ensuring that all outward-facing communications across various platforms and formats are of a high quality and reflect the identity, mission, and values of Impact Justice. The person filling this role will work closely with staff across the organization, and at all levels, to advance communications-related tasks and initiatives. The Senior Communications Manager will also interface with specialized consultants and benefit from one support staff member. The Senior Communications Manager ultimately will report to a Vice President for Communications and Marketing (search is underway), and in the interim will be supervised by the Vice President, Operations and guided by an experienced communications consultant.
Skills and Experience
We encourage applications from candidates who have the following skills and experience:
- At least 6 years of related professional experience.
- A track record of excellent writing and editing, demonstrating the ability to translate and present specialized knowledge, including data and other research, in ways that engage and inform diverse audiences.
- Savvy user of social media and other digital platforms who thinks creatively and strategically about the use of these communications channels and tools.
- Experience and comfort working with journalists in a shifting media landscape.
- Able to take initiative, manage tasks independently and meet deadlines, and also to follow direction and respond to constructive feedback.
- Comfort and ability advising, supporting, and collaborating with colleagues at all levels of the organization. Prior experience directly supervising staff is a plus.
- A curious mind, entrepreneurial spirit, and passion for social change.
- Desire to be part of an organization committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity in all aspects of its work and work culture.
The position will be paid $95,000 – $105,000. The benefits that come with working at Impact Justice include medical, dental, and FSA plans, significant vacation and wellness leave, and immediate vesting in our 401K with a generous match. This is a full-time, salaried position located in either our Washington, DC or Oakland, CA office. This is a hybrid work arrangement requiring at least two full days each week in the office. We are not considering remote staff for this position.
