Impact Justice is growing and focusing on building the internal infrastructure we need to support the incredible work we do externally!  After starting in 2015, we now have a staff of 75 and we are growing.  We’re looking to expand our DreamBuilders Team, who make everything we accomplish at Impact Justice possible, and we’re looking to hire folks who are experts in Getting It Done!

Who We Are

Impact Justice dares to dream of a humane and restorative system of justice in the United States. Through innovation, research, policy, and advocacy, we are forging a new path to a justice system that is fair to all of us.  In addition to our core programs around the enforcement of the Prison Rape Elimination Act, Restorative Justice, and the Research and Action Center, we are continually adding more to our portfolio of programs. Overall, we all work to reduce the number of individuals (adults and youth) entangled in the criminal justice system, to improve conditions and outcomes for those who are currently incarcerated, and to provide opportunities to those who are rejoining communities.  We employ a national team of advocates, researchers, monitors, practitioners, and experts united by this vision.  We work closely with communities of color, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning, gender nonconforming, and transgender communities, the formerly incarcerated, and former foster youth, and we are continually looking for opportunities to bring those with lived experience in those communities into our teams.  A majority of individuals on our current executive team identify as BIPOC and/or LGBTQ.  We’re committed to living our values and to creating the kinds of equitable and inclusive team environments internally that we fight to help create in our broader communities. Who You Are

You haven’t met a problem you can’t solve, and you love diving in and figuring out options for how to make things better.  You get excited about organization, details, and the behind-the-scenes logistics that enable the magic.  You can juggle multiple balls without stuff dropping, maximize efficiency without sacrificing quality, and are great at planning and projecting how much time and energy your various tasks and assignments will take. You can anticipate problems or decision-points and elevate those rather than waiting to be told or asked, and you aren’t comfortable letting even small errors slide. You’re comfortable working with multiple different leaders on various projects and are at ease being flexible and adaptable. You have a customer-service orientation, naturally empathize with colleagues to understand and anticipate where there are things you can address in order to minimize frustration, and don’t tend to get impatient or flustered easily.

What You Will Do 

The anticipated start date for this position is as soon as possible, so please don’t wait to apply!  You will report into our Chief Operating Officer and will support a range of more senior DreamBuilders.  You’ll be the CEO of making sure everything runs smoothly, and your core responsibilities will be:

  1. Office Management and Remote Support – You will own making sure the Oakland office space is functional and everyone, regardless of their physical location, has what they need to do their jobs well.  This means ensuring all systems are working effectively (mail, internet, phones, etc), that organization-wide licenses for systems/technology suites (such as Zoom and Asana) are in place, and that folks have the supplies they need when they need them (eliminating preventable delays and minimizing unplannable ones).   This also includes handling physical mail (and then scanning and routing that mail).  
  2. Onboarding (and Post-Covid Return to Office) – You will own making sure that staff first joining the team have what they need to be successful and hit the ground running.  This means working closely with our HR team to have the technology (hardware and software) and materials set up for folks’ first days and then also being the person to walk new team members through the onboarding training around IJ logistics and systems.  When Impact Justice returns to office post Labor Day (assuming the pandemic conditions subside as expected), you’ll play a crucial role in helping to see to that transition.     
  3. Calendaring and Event/Meeting Support – You will own maintaining the organizational calendar and supporting the planning and logistical preparation for internal and external organization meetings and events.  This will involve also surfacing questions and potential calendaring conflicts, getting aligned on tradeoffs, and ensuring that agendas accurately account for hidden times (like travel, transitions, breaks, eating, etc).  For executive team and management team meetings, this will also mean helping with the preparation of distributable materials before and after and may involve creating notes or records of some of those meetings.  You will act as the welcoming face of Impact Justice for people that visit our Oakland office.
  4. DreamBuilders Project Support – You will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer (and other DreamBuilders professionals as assigned) to help execute various projects as needed.  This could include researching options around data software and tools, collating information for an operational report or assessment, supporting a data migration and creating reporting criteria in the HR record-keeping system, looking into the best options for ergonomic office furniture, etc.  We’ll also look to you to help spot opportunities to better track and maintain information or otherwise realize the goals of the DreamBuilders Team.  


The position will be paid $52,000 – $56,000.  The benefits that come with working at Impact Justice include medical, dental, and FSA plans, significant vacation and wellness leave, immediate vesting in the 401k plan and a generous match.  This is a full-time, salaried position.  We require that the candidate be able to work out of our Oakland CA office.  We are not considering remote staff for this position.  However, the position will be 90% remote (with the exception of picking up and managing mail and deliveries) until our collective return to office post pandemic.
