About the Homecoming Project

Impact Justice developed the Homecoming Project to address the critical issue of reentry and avert the pitfalls of existing interventions. The Homecoming Project is a reentry housing service. This project is focused on Alameda County and utilizes untapped living spaces available in the community while freeing up desperately needed space in shelters and traditional transitional housing programs. The Homecoming Project leverages the private market and existing living spaces by funding rent for up to six months for participants returning home after a period of incarceration. The Homecoming project screens potential participants to identify/recruit hosts, matches community hosts with participants, assesses participants’ needs, and provides them wrap-around services to facilitate their health, well-being, and stability. 

The Job/Summary Position Description:

The shared economy model allows THP to house individuals in community host homes. Community hosts are the lifeline of the Homecoming Project. Their role in the project requires staff support, guidance, attention to detail, and consistent follow-through. Community Hosts participate in this program and as a result, receive a daily stipend of $25/day for up to six (6) months by allowing a participant to live in an extra room within their home. Hosts who are accepted into the program must be willing to participate in ongoing monitoring of the home and the housing arrangement with the participant. Hosts are required to share any updates, concerns, suggestions, and their overall experience with the Housing and Outreach Coordinator for the purpose of optimizing programmatic services and assistance. 

Community Hosts are accepted into this program, in part for their community-oriented values, and for their desire to assist the reentry population. It is important that Hosts demonstrate higher levels of social responsibilities, reliability, and model good behavior to set a positive example for the participant. Hosts are expected to practice and maintain good communication skills to aid in a successful housing arrangement. Hosts are strongly encouraged to participate in programs, support groups, and training which properly informs them about the reentry population and individuals on parole supervision. 

The Housing and Outreach Coordinator position will work closely with the Host Engagement and Marketing Coordinator to streamline the process of host engagement to full sign-on into the program. The Housing and Outreach Coordinator supports community hosts throughout the entire 6 month period and shortly thereafter. 

This position will report to the Program Manager and will collaborate closely with the Homecoming Project team.

Responsibilities:

The Housing and Outreach Coordinator is responsible for being the main point of contact for the community hosts. They are tasked with processing hosts throughout the phases of the program: 

  • Guide hosts through the intake process by assisting through the application process, conducting a home/neighborhood inspection, and performing a host readiness assessment/interview. 
  • Assist hosts in finding a well-matched participant and provide an orientation into the program upon application approval. 
  • Throughout the 6-month housing arrangement, the housing coordinator will provide ongoing monitoring, additional resources, and perform homesite visits.
  • Facilitate bi-monthly host training and educational sessions to enhance the hosting experience. 
  • Weekly review of potential hosts with the program team. 
  • Conduct host exit interviews, complete exit checklist, and facilitate host retention. 
  • In collaboration with the Host Engagement and Marketing Coordinator, this position will schedule, conduct and attend (virtually until safe to be in-person) outreach meetings with the community to share the project with target-audiences, develop and create strategies to build relationships in Alameda County and Contra Costa County. 
  • In collaboration with THP team, this position will help to identify potential Hosts through community outreach, utilizing THP marketing strategies and networking.

The Housing and Outreach Coordinator will assess the homeowner’s appropriateness for serving as a host, assist the Program Coordinator in matching hosts with participants, and participate in introductory meetings between hosts and participants. The Housing and Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining progress notes/reports on the hosts throughout the entire six month period.

Required Qualifications: 

The Housing and Outreach Coordinator should have at least 3 years of work experience in housing/rental properties/property management, and community outreach.  

  • An orientation in the ethos of social justice, racial justice, community, and mutuality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Public speaking skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, ability to use Microsoft Office Suite, Google G-Suite, and learn other information database systems quickly.
  • A valid Driver’s License with a clean and reliable vehicle, with the current registration and proof of insurance, is required and must meet the terms of IJ’s vehicle use policy. 
  • Driving is required to fulfill job responsibilities.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with good relationship-building techniques. 
  • Adept at time management and highly organized with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in networking skills with an ability to maintain established relationships. 

Orientation and belief that criminal justice involvement should not be an impediment to employment, career, and personal growth opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Proactive and independent with the ability to take initiative.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the reentry transitional process, including obstacles and barriers that formerly incarcerated people must go through when first released.
  • Worked closely with homeowners/renters to assist in housing stability.
  • Have experience conducting home/facility inspections.
  • Experience working in or with the criminal legal system.
  • High level of critical/analytical/interpretive thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Professional experience in the human services, social work, psychology or related field and demonstrated experience in rental housing programs for formerly incarcerated populations a plus
Travel:

Will require travel within Alameda County and Contra Costa County

Location:

Oakland, CA 

Work schedule:  

Full time, at 40-hrs per week

Compensation and Benefits:
  • $50,000-$60,000
