Impact Justice is a growing organization and focused on building the internal infrastructure we need to support the incredible work we do externally. IJ launched in 2015 and now has a staff of 85 and an $18M budget. We anticipate more growth in the future and we’re looking to expand our team. Impact Justice dares to dream of a humane and restorative system of justice in the United States. Through innovation, research, policy, and advocacy, we are forging a new path to a justice system that is fair to all of us. In addition to our core programs around the enforcement of the Prison Rape Elimination Act, Restorative Justice, and the Research and Action Center, we are continually adding more to our portfolio of Innovation programs. Overall, we all work to reduce the number of individuals (adults and youth) entangled in the criminal justice system, to improve conditions and outcomes for those who are currently incarcerated, and to provide opportunities to those who are rejoining communities. Who You Are

You are a seasoned marketing and communications professional ready to lead the organization’s efforts to establish IJ as a trustworthy and innovative leader in the field of criminal legal reform, and to shape the narratives around criminal legal reform to better educate the public and support IJ’s reform efforts. You have a track record of increasing visibility for an organization and supporting program staff in prioritizing and communicating out key messages in order to maximize impact and the ability to attract funding. You have designed and implemented strategic communications plans, managed external relationships, and are ready to tackle building a strong internal team. You are passionate about justice reform and hold values of diversity, equity and inclusion as central to your work. You have excellent written and oral communication skills, experience with social media and film, and are both creative and deadline-driven. You are eager to roll your sleeves up and get work done yourself, but you also have the ability to manage others (whether internal staff or external vendors).

What You Will Do

The anticipated start date for this position is as soon as possible, so please don’t delay in applying. You will be the head of all of IJ’s messaging functions, and your core responsibilities will be:

  1. Marketing and Communications Department Oversight and Growth/Development – You will build out a Marketing and Communications Department that is poised to serve and amplify our rapidly growing organization that will cross the 100-person threshold in 2022 and is expected to continue to grow. This involves hiring and overseeing all staff in the department, ensuring that the department is adequately attending to all aspects of its obligations – both those that sit primarily with you and those things delegated to others (whether employee, consultant, or vendor). Audit existing procedures and policies regarding all aspects of messaging and identify recommended additions, modification, or considerations as we seek to expand reach and market share in a manner that also expands the voices of those most impacted. Work closely with external consultants, team members, and with other members of the Executive Team on those efforts/initiatives already under way. Plan and lead Executive Team and Board of Directors discussions around marketing and communications and messaging-oriented infrastructure development, including on how best to use limited dollars to build/grow the Marketing and Communications team.
  2. Strategic Press Cultivation – You will drive attainment of ambitious goals around increased market share. Anticipate and forecast press opportunities, including opportunities to comment, be included in long-form pieces on criminal legal reform, place opinion pieces, and be featured in highlights for our programmatic work. Develop and maintain a pipeline of press contacts and connections in order to ensure regular, nationwide, and high-impact coverage. Identify external opportunities where IJ Leadership and/or staff can strategically maximize coverage, including conferences, commissions, and awards. Identify and suggest Marketing/Communications opportunities and unintended consequences that arise within the full range of Executive and Management Team decision-making, and provide coaching to members of the Executive Team, one-on-one and as a group, to develop the awareness and competencies around Marketing and Communications.
  3. Marketing and Development Coordination – This means coordinating closely with the President and the Development Team on attracting and retaining engaged, committed, and generous donors. Lead efforts to focus/refocus social media on engagement, identification and cultivation of key external influencers to partner with IJ around our work generally and around development tied to our work, and otherwise ensure there is a measurable and growing return on our investments in these areas. Build managerial and organizational capacity and habits around consideration of marketing outcomes when approaching communications opportunities.
  4. Executive Advising – This involves allocating time to leading discussions with and advising the Executive team on both strategic planning and operational considerations related to the organization’s messaging efforts.


IJ seeks a Director level candidate but will consider hiring at the Vice President level if the candidate has prior qualifying performance at that level or similar senior executive experience – characterized by a highly strategic emphasis and independent leadership authority. The position will be paid $130,000-$150,000 at the Director level, or $150,000 to $170,000 at the Vice President level, depending on qualifications. This is a full-time, salaried position located in either our Washington DC or Oakland CA office.

We ARE NOT considering remote staff for this position, though IJ offices are open on a voluntary basis and we anticipate a phased-in return to office beginning Spring 2022, depending on COVID-19 pandemic conditions. IJ will offer a hybrid schedule (i.e. some regular telework) even after the return to office.
